Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old technology executive at The New York Times, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds in California on Saturday afternoon. The incident is reportedly linked to a bitter family dispute involving his in-laws and estranged wife over his transgender identity.
Background of Family Tensions
According to court documents, McKinsey had been engaged in a contentious legal battle with his wife, Candice Jang. In 2025, Jang sought a restraining order against him, to which McKinsey responded with a request for a restraining order of his own.
In his filing, McKinsey alleged that Jang attempted to remove medical tubes from his body during his transition from female to male in 2010. The couple married in 2011.
Allegations of Abuse and Violence
McKinsey’s documents also revealed that his mother-in-law, Shili Chen, had referred to him using derogatory terms, including “disgusting queer” and “pervert,” following disputes regarding their children’s clothing choices.
The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. on Saturday, leading to the arrest of McKinsey’s in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both aged 77, who now face murder charges.

McKinsey and Jang’s relationship has been marred by allegations of violence. In 2013, McKinsey claimed that Jang struck him with a frying pan. He also accused her of verbally abusing their children.
